Snaps of Chorlton No 9 the parish churchyard before the landscaping, 1976

An occasional series featuring private and personal photographs of Chorlton.

We are in the parish graveyard in 1976.  I have to say despite walking through the place many times I have no recollection of it looking like this.  And I pretend to be a historian.

Picture; from the collection of Lois Elsden

  1. I hope it doesn't look like this when we are filming there this afternoon - more like a scene from "Great Expectations"! But it is a shame that they used the memorial stones as paving - gradually wearing away.

  2. Yes I agree Michael, but what I hadn't realized was that the stones laid on the path predated the landscaping in the 1980s, and are there in pictures from the 19th century. Still a criminal thing to have done taking most away and no doubt hardcore somewhere
