I could further speculate that due to the lack of insignia and no visible cap badges that these are new recruits. Note the second man in has his hands behind his back whilst the rest appear to be at a 'slovenly' attention which [to me] indicates a lack of drill training. I know from my own research that Kitchiner's 4th Army was fromed with recruits from early 1915 and around this time with my own grandfather being one of them (from Colwyn Bay). Many of those joining the Royal Engineers went to No 1 Depot [Royal Engineers] in Deganwy for training and it was these trainee engineers who built the original Sappers bridge in Betwy-y-Coed as part of their training.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
