“Martledge is reborn ...... or still lives on”

Now as regular readers to the blog will know I have been keen to resurrect Martledge which was the old name for that bit of Chorlton beyond the Four Banks.

It disappeared as a name along with the fields, and farms of the housing boom which in just 25 years transformed the area.

So final was that change that the old name of Martledge was lost and in its place people called it New Chorlton of the new village to distinguish it from old Chorlton around the village green and up Beech Road.

Not that we were immune to those name changes because Beech Road was for centuries called  Chorlton Row which might have confused a few people with hat other place with the same name in Chorlton on Medlock.

But at least someone has woken up to the old name of Martledge, sending Andy this addressed envelope which carried the title Chorlton-cum-Martledge.

And that was the story, until Andy owned up and told me he had given the name  Chorlton-cum-Martledge as his address to the company who saw no reason not to use it.

Ah well he had me for minute ........ still wouldn’t it be nice if it were true?

I might even start using Chorlton Row.
