Out in Warrington on a day in July .......... a set of golden gates

Now if ever I wanted a reminder of how I should get out more it was yesterday.

We had taken the train to Warrington to the railway station Bank Quay, and I have to say I was just a bit apprehensive, given that hard by the station was a huge plant for Unilver, which consisted of tall storage tanks and lots of pipes.

But outside directly opposite was the Patten Arms Hotel and signs for the museum.

And in the course of the next ten minutes I stumbled over some fine buildings including the Town Hall and its gilded gates.

Another day in Warrington ................. nu 3 finding ath best place to photograph the Barley Mow back in 2016

Now the day, two years ago, we went to Warrington we were promised what would be the best day for catching the sun.

And that was pretty much the case although there were great chucks of the day when the clouds did their best to both hide the sun and threaten rain.

But there was enough sun, the day was warm and the result was more pictures of Warrington a place I have only been to once before.

Now with no idead where I was going I came across the Barley Mow which I am told is a "historic 15th century half-timbered building in centre of modern shopping development. Grade 2 Plus listing status.*




All of which is interesting but didn't help me get a good picture.

Another day in Warrington ................. nu 2 passing the pub on Buttermarket Street in 2016

Yesterday we were promised what would be the best day for catching the sun.

But there was enough sun, the day was warm and the result was more pictures of Warrington a place I have only been to once before.

And as you do I was drawn into the shopping centre and ended up outside the Lower Angel on Buttermarket Street, which of course begs the question ... was there and is there an Upper Water Angel public house?

I shall go looking but in the meantime three is this, "a step back in time in the traffic-free area of Warrington town centre's heart with a traditional vault and lounge layout and rear beer garden. 

Memorabilia from the former Walker's brewery and stained glass windows can be seen. 

There are plans to relaunch the mothballed brewery behind the pub in future. The six changing beers are mainly from independent breweries. 

The Dark Mild is invariably from Dunham Massey but does occasionally change. Real cider is available spring through to summer whilst up to 70 malt whiskies are offered."*

Another day in Warrington ................. nu 1 in the park

Yesterday we were promised what would be the best day for catching the sun.

And that was pretty much the case although there were great chucks of the day when the clouds did their best to both hide the sun and threaten rain.

But there was enough sun, the day was warm and the result was more pictures of Warrington a place I have only been to once before.

So wandering up from the station I fell across the little park and the memorial to the men of the 1st Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment who participated in the South African War.

It was unveiled on February 21 1907.

Out in Warrington in June .......... always look at the detail

Now it is one of those simple observations that many of us don’t go looking for the detail in the buildings we pass.

So here in Warrington just down from the Town Hall with the sun shining I noticed he working above the window.

In one sense it is the sort of detail that adorns plenty of shops of a certain period.

In this case I think we may be looking at what was once a Co-op.  I know that other shops also had similar designs but in this case there was also a side entrance to what I suspect was once the way up to a meeting room which were common in Co-op buildings.

I don’t have any street directories for Warrington and have no knowledge of the history of the Co-op in the area so that is where I shall have to leave it.

That said I bet someone will.
