Now I don’t know Castle Street, but Andy
Robertson does, and on a recent visit he took this picture, which I like,
because it captures a bit of the timeless retail history.
There will be other parades of shops and high
streets which can boast an old-fashioned cobbler’s, a launderette and a pet
shop, along with a traditional electrical business, stocking washing machines
fridges, and lots more, but these types of small retail enterprises are disappearing.
The onward march of online shopping, and
the supermarkets that will sell you everything from a packet of peas to a TV
are pushing out the local trader.
So, Andy’s picture is a reminder of how we
all once shopped.
Not that Castle Street is a relic of the
past. Anyone who knows it well will be
able to rehearse some of the business that have come and gone over the last decade
and may be able to remember just how many times the Royal Oak has been repainted
since 2008.
