Well that title may be a bit deceptive given that 1966 may be a tad more than “just before now”.
But then to me it was just before now, which pretty much gives my age away.
I was sixteen, the world and all it had to offer was ahead of me and the Co-op on the corner of Barlow Moor Road had not long since had a new sign, more in keeping with “modern times”.
But it was still divided up into different retail area with a proper butcher and a grocery shop which would not have looked out of place half a century earlier.
That said, we are in the 1960s, and the big bill boards and especially the style of the B.O.A.C advert takes me back.
And in some ways as I have often observed these images from our more recent past are almost more dated than those that show the old Corporation trams, the women in long dresses and the errand boy on his bike.
It was taken in the November of 1966 and has recently come to light through a new project..
Neil Simpson tells me that “the Town Hall Photographer's Collection Digitisation Project, which currently is Volunteer led and Volunteer staffed is in the process of taking the 200,000 negatives in the collection dating from 1956 to 2007 and digitising them.
The plan is to gradually make the scanned images available online - initially on the Manchester Local Images Collection Website."*
