Castlefield

Castlefield remains one of my favourite places in the city. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries it was one of our transport hubs. First the river, then the Duke’s Canal and finally the first passenger railway station in the world all combined t make it a busy and thriving place.
Its slow decline through the middle of the 20th century was arrested and now it is a heritage centre with fine bars, a museum, Roman remains and much else. But more on its history later.
