Made in the North, photographs by Paul Wolfgang Webster

I have just revisited the exhibition of Made in the North by the photographer, Paul Wolfgang Webster.

They are a wonderful collection of portraits of people from the North ranging from Alan Bennet and Jason Manford, to Julie Hesmondhalgh, Heather Blears, Joan Bakewell and Jeremy Paxton.

They are on show at Mr Thomas’s on Cross Street, both as large wall mounted pictures and in a book that comes with the menu, and it was there that I learnt

“Paul was a butcher in Rochdale in1982. He went to Athens with his girlfriend and bought his first camera for the trip, it was a Ricoh KR10.

His first photo was tourist snap.

Now he has four photographs in The National Portrait Gallery, London.”

And when you look at those on display you can see why he  exhibits in London.

I could go on but I shall just reflect that while I so often write about our history it is nice to focus on what is going on now here in both the North and in Manchester.

After all I still get a thrill at seeing that motorway sign which just says “The North.”
