The Drum, Peter's painting and an excellent story from Pubs of Manchester

This was the Drum in Stretford.

Although it is equally likely that many will remember it variously as the Drum or the Bass Drum and now  it has gone.

Peter painted the place just before Derek the demolition man got going on what had become a sad and forlorn looking building.

Now I have written about the pub before as well as the Angel which had stood on the same spot for centuries and I had wondered about doing a new story on its final demolition and the rise of that fast food place which now inhabits the site.*

But that has been done already by that wonderful Pubs of Manchester, so I shall just direct you to the link below which will smoothly and with less time than it took to order a pint bring transport you to what happened as Peter’s painting was drying.**

  1. I watched the Bass Drum as it was known in 1975, go up brick by brick, from the window of the snooker room of the nearby Stretford benefit Office on Brunswick Street. I was determined to be the first customer and so myself and my friend Bill were stood outside at 5.30 waiting for the landlord to open up. For some reason, he didn't open on time and so Bill and I made our way across the road to the Moulin Rouge for a swift half. We returned only fifteen minutes later, just as the landlord, Brian was opening up. Sadly, I was now second in the queue. First drink was on the house and never had I tasted a nicer pint. Mind, I was only 19 at the time, but I assume it was because the pipes were so clean

  2. Stretford pubs weren't really much better than a lunchtime drink or two when passing through to town, see United or where ever.Still like most pubs,i'm sad that option has gone with them all permanently shut. The dreary watering holes of Stretford proudly had their place. .
