How we used to live

Once they would have been in almost every kitchen in the country. They were heavy often repainted over the years and to my mind quite beautiful.

They were that perfect marriage of simple design and appearance.

And most will have been thrown out in the late 1960s as old fashioned, replaced by sleek plastic and chrome ones with that easy to read circular window.

Bits like the weights might survive at the back of a cabinet or as playthings, but in the fullness of time like the heavy iron balance they would be thrown away.

Which I think is a pity given that to buy a retro version today will cost an arm and a leg.

  1. Still have a set, which were in use until a couple of years ago when my culinary skills demanded the micro-precision of a cheapo metric set the size of a slice of bread. They'll be back in action when the batteries run out.
