Five ambulances and the Two Worlds ……………

The caption on the picture postcard simply records “ONE of the FIVE MOTOR AMBULANCES SUBSCRIBED FOR by the Spiritualists of Great Britain” and includes a reference to THE TWO WORLDS”

And that is about it, but when David Harrop showed me the picture postcard, I knew there would be a story.

As yet I am not sure just what the story is, or more accurately just exactly what more we can find out.

The Two Worlds Publishing Company was founded in Manchester in 1887 to produce their periodical, The Two Worlds.

In 1911 their offices were based at 18 Corporation Street and their secretary was a James Morse.

As well as the newspaper they published books on Spiritualism, year books and promotional material.

And with that huge surge of patriotism at the outbreak of the Great War, it is no surprise that the readers of The Two Worlds should be asked to subscribe to the war effort.

I have no date for the five ambulances, and as yet no knowledge of what happened to them or the work they did.

So, for now that is it.

Location; Manchester & the Great War

Picture; one of the five ambulances, date unknown, from the collection of David Harrop
