The Great War picture postcard ……… with a difference

Now, I have to agree with my old friend David Harrop, who in sharing this card with me commented, “that it was one with a difference”.

And so, it is, because the message on the back is in Welsh, leaving me later to carefully transfer the message to google translate, although there will be someone who can offer up a translation.

But what also makes the card interesting is the company who produced it.

This was Gale & Polden, who were James Gale and T. Ernest Polden,  of Aldershot.

According to one source Mr. Gale was a stationer & retired naval officer who entered into a partnership with T. Ernest Polden during the 1860s.  In 1885 they opened a factory in Chatham, Kent and in 1892 they formed a public company, opening a branch at Wellington Street, Aldershot the following year. *

Given the size and importance of the military garrison in Aldershot, the firm specialized in military publishing, and a quick trawl of the internet shows that many of their military cards can still be picked up today.

They range from depicting regimental badges to very detailed and attractive representations of army uniforms, which are often accompanied by notes on the history of the regiment.

All of which makes David’s card all the more interesting.
