Uncovering the past of Chorlton, Stretford and lots more places .......... one to do

Now stand in the right spot just beyond the weir behind the river looking out towards the Kickety Brook and the Duke’s Canal and you can get a sense of our past.

The picture dates from 1979, and that is St Mathew’s Church at Stretford in the distance.

It looks the characteristic rural scene  and yet from the 18th century this stretch of land existed to act as a protection to the canal’s viaduct against a surge of flood water sweeping down from the Mersey, which the weir directed down to the Kickety Brook, calming the force of that surge.

The weir dates from the 18th century was rebuilt in the 1840s and last performed that task the beginning of the last century.

All of which will be news to many people, although there are two excellent books on the area, and the interested might also want to call in to St Matthew's Church Hall, Chester Road for the Family & Local History Fair on Saturday 7th September.

The day will include two talks on local history and thre will be plenty of stalls offering a wealth of local history.
