In West Didsbury with the Synagogue ….. doing the essential walk and making it historic .... no. 10

Now I am really enjoying the pictures Barbarella is sending of her essential walks, and today is no exception.

Her Sunday walk began in “Didsbury ending in Chorlton near the M&S- Leon fabrics, and then back via Southern Cemetery”.

And along the way there was the  Shaare Hayim Synagogue which is an impressive building, located on Queenston Road and extending down Old Lansdowne Road.

“It dates from 1927 and is a Grade ll listed building.

Originally, it served the needs of the Withington Congregation of Spanish and Portuguese Jews, which had previously been located on Mauldeth Road in Withington, and which was formed in 1904.

In 1997 the congregation merged with the Sha'are Sedek Synagogue which worshipped on Old Landsdowne Road and was formed in 1924.

Both congregations are from the Sephardic tradition which originated in the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa and Middle East.

The merger resulted in the demolition of the Old Landsdowne Synagogue and the development of the site for residential properties, which allowed the funding of the renovation of the Queenston site”.*
