Home Children Canada ……..

British Home Children is the study of the migration of children from Britain to Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These migrations were supervised by British charities often on behalf Poor Law Unions.

At the very beginning in 1870, some of these young people were destitute, living an earning welling what every they could, while others came from families who for a variety of reasons believed they could no longer offer them a secure future.

It is still a little known period of British and Canadian history, and by extension the histories of other former colonies of the old British Empire.

I came to it quite late, having stumbled across our own British Home Child in 2008, and to the realization that the number of British history books on the subject is limited to just one, while in Canada there are many more.

I was helped in the early stages, by Judy Neville who in turn put me in touch with Lori Oschefski, and the rest as they say has been a friendship which extends over a decade.

Lori has campaigned for greater awareness of the story of BHC, has an extensive and excellent site dedicated to BHC studies and published a regular newsletter, of which this is the September edition.
