Hidden Chorlton …… with a hint of mystery and history

It is easy sometimes to forget that there is still plenty of green spaces with history here in Chorlton.

So today on another hot day I went off looking for places with plenty of green, a hint of the hidden and a bit of the past.

The first is the Brook which winds it way from the border with Withington out onto the meadows and into the Mersey.

You can track its tributaries into Withington and off to Gorton, and in it’s time it was subject to complaints about how polluted it had become.

My solitary reader in the tress sits close to the old wooden changing rooms and just a little walk from our own bandstand and open-air theatre, which were constructed when the path was opened in the 1920s.

And finally, one of those magic little paths that wind in between the trees and offer up all sorts of adventures.

Location; Chorlton Park

Pictures; Chorlton Brook, the lost changing rooms, and a secret place, 2023, from the collection of Andrew Simpson

Remember my first cigarette here in 1954.
