One hundred years of one house in Chorlton part 89 ......... two houses, one owner .... and a bit more about Mr Scott

The continuing story of the house Joe and Mary Ann Scott lived in for over 50 years and the families that have lived here since.*

Now, a little bit of Mr and Mrs Scott’s life has just been revealed in a way I just love.

Joe Scott built and owned houses across Chorlton and quite a few people I know lived in one of his houses.

So far so good but what I hadn’t realized was that Andy Robertson who takes many fine photographs which he shares with the blog also lived in a Scott house.

Yesterday afternoon he emailed, me, "Just got the deeds to our house yesterday, with documents going back to 1907. Naturally I have just started doing a bit of research.

The land was purchased from the Egertons by two builders John Titterington and Walter Thomas Scott, but they dissolved their partnership in 1908, so Scott took over our house.

He seems to have sold or rented it to his younger brother Joseph Taylor Scott.

Joseph married Mary Ann Tilsley, April 6th 1910, he was living in the family home 69 Ryebank Road (they previously lived at 2 Fielden Avenue), Mary Ann was living at 39 Clarence Road.

Tracking death records I found that Mary Ann died in 1973 at 41 Beech Road.

Is this a coincidence or what?”

To which the answer is yes, but then history is messy and given that Joe built lots of houses off Beech Road, Oswald Road, and Ivygreen I guess it was only to be expected.

Now I had done some research on Joe and Mary Ann.

I knew that Joe’s father was a plaster and the family had moved up from London just as the housing boom of the 1880s was underway, and that later Joe and Mary Ann began their married life over what is now the Chinese takeaway on Manchester Road.

But I didn’t know that Mary Ann had been at 39 Clarence Road where Andy lived.

So apart from the nice piece of continuity between Andy’s house and this one, there is as ever a story about how the Chorlton we know came to be, and points up that other observation that Chorlton has always been home to lots of people who were not born here.
