When history comes ……. as a walk …. some silly stories ….. and some old friends

So yesterday we did another of those history walks, and as ever it was a delightful stroll made all the more pleasant by a heap of old friends who braved the cold.

We wandered down Beech Road, looking for Chorlton Row and along the way discovered what the place would have been like in 1848 and who you might have to be polite to.

And for those who are familiar with the activity it was another out rageous bit of self promotion centred on a new Simpson Topping book.

This one was in our new series nothing to do in chorlton, which offer you six locations where you can sit take in the views and read the history of the location while enjoying one of Peter Topping’s original paintings.*

This book is number three and is simply entitled “Down Beech Road Looking for Chorlton Row”.  Each costs just £4.99 is small enough to slip into your pocket or into that all important Christmas stocking.

Yesterday that heap of old friends encountered the wealthy Mr. Holt, a slew of farmers and the gang of school children who hid their teacher’s breakfast bowl beside Bromley’s Fish pond which once ran down from Chequers Road to Acres Road.

Now I say old friends, but none are really that old, but most I have known for years and join us for each walk.  But amongst them there are a few new friends who have become fans of the walks.

So thank you to all who did the stroll on a cold Sunday and a head’s up for the next in the series which will focus on our very old parish church and grave yard on the green, and feature some of those who were buried there.

Location; Beech Road
