Goodbye …. and thanks for half a century of selling us all we wanted

So, it’s looks to be official …… the shopping centre which has served Chorlton for over 50 years is going to change. *

Despite previous plans to tamper with the place and give it a makeover, it would seem that accrording to the consultation document the new development “create a neighbourhood that responds to how people, live work, shop and spend” and may include “up to 200 new homes and retail destinations alongside open outdoor spaces” and will involve demolishing all of the existing buildings. **

And that I guess means that the Precinct we have known will go.

Already the first phase of a consultation process has passed which will followed by further consultation in October on the master plan, culminating with a planning application in late 2023.

All of which prompted Peter Topping to begin a new project, as part of his mission to paint all of thiconic buildings in Chorlton. He has decided to document the remaining eleven businesses and being an artist to paint each one in the style of Van Gogh.

So far, the blog has featured six of the eleven, and today here are the rest.

All are familiar and some have a long history which leaves me just to say if you want their back stories call in, buy something, and ask.

Location; Chorlton

  1. So sad. I remember as an eighteen year old working in Iceland as an interim job. I wonder if this new project is going to be built so it becomes part of “The fifteen minute scheme planned by the government”.

  3. For me the precinct has not been the same since the large cafe closed; spent many good times in their in the early 1990s. I think it was where Chorlton Art Market is now.
