Heading south to the Didsbury Beer Festival .................. at the end of the month

Now if you have an inclination to travel south to Didsbury, I can think of nothing better than to fall into the Didsbury Beer Festival.

This will be its 12th year and it runs from October 31st through to November 2nd at St Catherine’s Community Centre on School Lane.

There will be “200 beers, ciders and perries along with with great food & music”.

And my interest has been set off, not only because of our new book on the pubs and bars of Didsbury, but by the reference to ciders and perries, which I am convinced will have been made locally.

Just down the road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, there is plenty of evidence that apples and pears were cultivated extensively for the Manchester markets. *

One of pears was the Newbridge pear which was traditionally made into perry.

And in one of those outrageous bouts of self-promotion I will refer to that book of ours again.**

It is the next in our series of Manchester Pubs- The Stories Behind the Doors and contains 49 pubs and bars, grouped into six walks, ranging from the oldest to the most recent, and is fascinating selection of stories with more than 450 painting and pictures.

The book is available from us at www.pubbooks.co.uk and from E J Morton, 6 Warburton Street, Didsbury, Manchester M20 6WA,  0161 445 7629,  morten.booksellers@lineone.net

Leaving me just to decide on which days I shall be taking the tram from Chorlton to the Didsbury Beer Festival. ***
