Now I have been staring at Andy’s picture of 310 Deansgate and trying to puzzle out what once stood on this corner.
I know that the present building was once the Pig and Whistle, and since 2008 has been home to three Asian restaurants of which 310 Deansgate is the latest.
But what inhabited the spot before the new building went up I can’t remember.
Back in 1911 it was the Union Bank of Manchester (Campfield Branch), and it may have continued to do banking into the late 20th century.
I know that the bank became an “affiliated bank” within the Barclays Group in 1919, and was fully absorbed by Barclays in 1940.
The answer may lie with the trade and street directories, which will mean asking Andy who has the last directory for Manchester & Salford which was issued in 1969.
Alas Andy found no entry for the site, so it may have become an empty plot.
I have to confess I can't remember, and if we are talking about memories I got the name wrong. It was the Pig and Porcupine, which was pointed out by PJ, which led me on to look it up on that excellent site Pubs of Manchester, which records that, "The Pig & Porcupine at the bottom of Deansgate was a modern Boddington's and then Holt's house, and a popular match day haunt for United fans before their journey down Chester Road to Old Trafford.
It was also popular with a few Corrie stars from the nearby Granada Studios and was so close to the studios that Granada used the Pig & Porcupine as Liz McDonald's pub, The Queens. It closed around 2005 before reopening as an Italian Restaurant, Negresco".
Now, I remember Negresco, and even turned up a picture of the place but for what ever reason failed to include it in the original story, so that has also been corrected.
And I thought a trawl of the Local Images collection might jogg my memory about the previous building on the site.
And I did turn up one which quite clearly is the bank from 1965, but alas it did nothing to bounce the building into my memory.

It was actually 'The Pig & Porcupine', a Holts pub.
