Faded glory …… and reflections of better times

Now, I have Brenda to thank for giving me permission to post her picture of the entrance to Cliefden.

Cliefden, 2022

She posted it on that excellent Facebook site I’m from S.E. London and Bromley, and commented that “I was in n Eltham High Street yesterday. Saw this interesting doorway with many windows above, a sizeable building, not in a good state of repair now”.

Cliefden, 1977

It was once an elegant 18th century property on the High Street, and is a building with a long history which over the years I have written about.*

For many it will just be the two shops either side of that tired looking door.

But in it’s time it was a family home and even a military academy.

Perhaps its long and fascinating history as a once fine Eltham home will embolden someone to give it a makeover.

We shall see.
