On Edge Lane with the Stretford Pageant sometime in the 1960s

I am back with another of those excellent photographs from the collection of Jack Kennedy.*

And this time we are with the Stretford Pageant sometime in the 1960s on Edge Lane just before the procession made its way into Longford Park.

Now there are many in Stretford and Chorlton who will have very fond memories of this event and I featured the memories of one Rose Queen from 1928 a few years ago.**

Jack’s picture perfectly captures the moment, so much so that there isn’t anything more to add.

  1. Money was thrown into the float by the crowds along the pavement. Any coins that missed were seen as fair game for the throng of youngsters who eagerly collected it. Had we no morals?!

  2. We all loved the pageant, and would go with our mums to watch the parade in Longford Park. There was a charge to enter the park, so the mums would go in and pay, while we kids squeezed through the railings further up and joined them inside. We would all then be able to have our hands stamped when we came out, which meant we could all go to the fair later that evening without having to pay again!
