A little bit of Didsbury's cinema history

Now there will be many with fond memories of the Capitol Cinema, which in 1956 became ABC’s television studios, before finally being demolished in 1999 to be replaced by a block of flats.

And there will be those who remember its time as the Horniman Theatre when from 1971 it was Manchester Polytechnic’s School of Theatre where it staged performances by students of the college, including early performances by Julie Walters, Bernard Hill, and David Threlfall.

Now I am not going to dwell on its glory days as a picture house but just reflect on the moment it came down courtesy of another of Andy Robertson’s pictures.

Andy has a habit of recording bits of the city just before they disappear so I have always been adamant that he should never tale a photo of our house.

That said I am glad he is around doing the business which will prove a vital archive for the future.
