F. Garner ...... another story from Tony Goulding

Following the recent story about the trophy presented to F Garner by Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club on the 28th March, 1925 I rose to the challenge it posed and went in search of this man.

I can’t be sure that he is this golfer but there is a Fred Garner of 33, Meadow Bank, Chorltonville who was the father of three children baptised at St. Clement’s Church. (Sheila Margaret on the 1st July, 1914, Kathleen on the 22nd September, and Geoffrey William on the 30th January, 1921)

The church register records Mr. Garner's occupation as “bank clerk” and the mother’s name as, Ethel.

This led to finding Fred and Ethel’s wedding at St Paul’s Church, Withington, Manchester on Tuesday the 2nd September, 1913.

Fred Garner remained at 33, Meadow Bank until his death at Manchester Royal Infirmary on the 9th September, 1949.

The national register a decade previously had recorded his occupation as “bank accountant”.

This register also provided his date of birth as the 11th October, 1883, which led to his place of birth, Clayton, Lancashire and more details from his entries in various censuses.

In 1891 he was living at 4, Oldfield Street, Droylsden, Lancashire with his parents Frank, described as a “cat-gut manufacturer", and Emma (née Grimshaw), his aunt Elizabeth Grimshaw, a seamstress, and one servant, the housekeeper Annie Haynes. In 1901, the family had relocated to 3, The Crescent, Egerton Road, Fallowfield, Manchester his father then recorded as a coach proprietor and Fred had started work as a bank clerk.

Another change being that the family no longer employed a servant.

Ten years later Fred Garner was still living in Fallowfield with his aunt, however both his parents had by this time died. His father on the 23rd November, 1902 and his mother in the November of the following year.
