A clay pipe, a roll of wall paper and an old shoe .... the Baptist Street Dig

Now I remain in awe of archaeologists, whose day job consists of holding in their hands objects which may date back thousands of years and which will be a clue to how our ancestors went about their daily lives.

At which point I am fully aware that long days, on your knees, in poor weather can be challenging and for every gold coffin there are shed loads of broken clay pipes, rusty tin pots and bits of old shoe leather.

But even the mundane has a story to tell.

So Andy Robertson made his down to the open day at Baptist Street hard by Rochdale Road where the site is being excavated.

He saw lots of “wonderful things” and here are some of those including some rolls ofwall paper which were left behind in the shop on the site which had traded there back in 1969.

Eat your heart out Howard Carter.

Which just leaves me to promise that in the fullness of time I will be back with more stories, more pictures and lots more.

So as they say watch this space.
