Arriving at Luton …….. Friday July 1st 2021

Now, I have often wondered why the arrival area of most airports is pretty basic and doesn’t really offer a welcome.

By comparison, the departure area is busy, full of things to see, and once you have passed onto airside the purchasing opportunities are endless as are the bars and restaurants.

Of course, I suppose the difference is that in Departure the passenger is trapped while waiting for their flight and in that sort of happy mood which means the purchase of a thirty-year-old bottle of Scotch, somebody’s choice of the best summer novel and an extra pair of sunglasses all add to the holiday feeling.

Not so of course the Arrival area, which remains very basic, and  is a recognition that the place is just a passing through moment, before the weary traveler finds the taxi, train or bus to get home.

Some airports do better than others and one of the Manchester terminals offers a few places to eat, and shop for those presents that were never bought at the seaside resort.

Luton does have few cafes, but the Marks and Spencer’s is closed and the food outlets are basic.

We had driven down from Manchester to Luton to pick up Rosa who had flown in from Milan.  In these uncertain Covid times she was booked to arrive courtesy of Easy Jet in to Manchester Airport, but the flight was cancelled until August, and Luton was the only alternative.

Still it did give us an opportunity to see how Luton Airport does things.
