Bedtime for a car ……… how we used to do things

You don’t see many cars wrapped up and tucked in for bed these days.

When I was growing up in the 1950s,plenty of the car owners where we lived would cover their vehicle for the night.

But then, car ownership in Peckham was still small, and most properties had been built a century ago long before there was a need for a garage.

So, the few proud car owners were impelled to protect their investment as it sat on the road outside the house.  And it was a practice which extended to motorbikes as well.

Now I might just have got it a tad wrong, and wrapping up the car was something you did when you didn’t intend to use it for a while.

Either way you do sometimes still see a car in its cover on a road.  This one, I spotted recently in south Manchester.

And in the interests of historical research, I wonder how many other cars there are tucked up.

Location; south Manchester
