Now for as long as I can remember the Royal Veteran on the corner of Irwell Street and Stanley Street stood alone.
I have to confess until Andy sent over these pictures and referred to the building as the Veteran I had no idea it had once been a pub.
That said it does have the look of one, and with a little research I discovered it had once been the Royal Veteran which in the 1890s was run by a Mrs Jane Perry.
In the fulness of time I will go looking for Mrs Perry and track the history of the pub, but for now it is enough to know that the patch of land beside the former Veteran which runs up to the river has been developed along with the old carpark on the opposite side of the pub.
In the process the old painted ghost side on the gable end of the Royal Veteran has been lost to us.
It announced Riverside House, was obscured for most of the last century under modern advertising hoardings only reappearing in 2016, and has now gone forever.
I did try to look for the place, but as yet have not found a reference to it.
In the 1890s the plot between the river and the pub was open land.
But I am fairly confident someone will remember Riverside House, along with those who have fond memories of the Royal Veteran or Veteran and I hope will add a contribution to the story.
We shall see.
And they did.
Just an hour or so after the story went live, Eddie Smith got in touch.
I have long been a fab of Eddie's pictures, and I am equally impressed with both his depth of knowledge of Salford and his determination to share its history.
Having read the blog story on the Royal Veterans he added "The Royal Veterans Tavern, Stanley Street/New Quay Street...
The Veterans closed as a pub in April 1939 and the licence was transferred to the rebuilt Fusiliers (Paddock) on Cross Lane.
Later the building became known as the "Ralli Buildings" and also "Riverside House". — in City of Salford".
And added his own picture of the pub which I was very pleased to include.
Location; Irwell Street, Salford
Pictures; Irwell Street, 2015 and 2019, from the collection of Andy Robertson, and in 2016 from the collection of Andrew Simpson, and in 2015, courtesy of Eddie Smith
