Snaps of Chorlton No 6 the parish churchyard before the landscaping, 1976
An occasional series featuring private and personal photographs of Chorlton.
We are in the parish graveyard in 1976. I have to say despite walking through the place many times I have no recollection of it looking like this. And I pretend to be a historian.
I remember it this way, as a spooky place to pass on the way to/from Cubs at the hut by the brook, down the cobbled lane to the sewage farm. We never walked thro it, but I recall the grave surrounded by a set of low spikey railings, which folk memory erroneously told us was the resting place of a convict, hence the railings to keep him restrained. Complete nonsense, I'm sure you can tell me more about the actual history of that grave.
The hut was where the carpark is on the right as you go through the entrance of East Didsbury & Chorlton football ground. It was burnt down after some local youths set it alight.
