Haystack Ablaze at Chorlton .............. Breaking News .... 1914

Now I like the way old friends offer up bits of their own research for the blog.

So, today Lawrence sent over this priceless piece of Breaking News, and rather than make a mess of representing it, I shall just quote what he sent over with the press clipping.

“Saw this cutting in The Suffragette 3rd April 1914. It’s essentially a word for word copy of The Manchester Guardian story 28th March 1913.

I thought of you - another age of haystacks on Barlow Moor Road - possibly a farm around the Southern Cemetery area.

Leaving a copy of The Suffragette newspaper at the scene of the crime was often used to claim responsibility and obtain publicity for the cause. Paraffin was readily available in ironmongers even when I was a lad.

Getting nostalgic here for the smell of ironmongers something you don’t get tramping round B&Q".

I may or may not return to the story, and I expect Lawrence will burrow deeper into the events of that March day.

Or that might inspire someone else as well.

Location; Chorlton-cum-Hardy
