The Beech Road story, past and present at the library

Well we have brought it back.

From today in Chorlton Library you can see the story of Beech Road from its beginnings as a collection of cottages, posh houses and farms to the mix of interesting shops, restaurants and bars that it has become. The GLAD TO BE IN CHORLTON Past and Present exhibition was first shown at the Big Green Festival and attracted a lot of interest, so here it is again.

Peter has painted a series of pictures of the road today to contrast with my stories of Beech Road at the beginning, middle and end of the 19th century.

So once you have admired the paintings and taken in the history you can always try matching one of the shops in Peter’s pictures with what they sold a hundred years ago.  Now I am not giving anything away but it is possible to find two shops which continue today to sell exactly what they did in 1911.  The only clue is that they are side by side.

Once you have visited the exhibition why not post your answer on the comments section of the blog or on the GLAD TO BE IN CHORLTON site on facebook.  No prizes other than the satisfaction of being the first to get it right.

Peter’s work is on display around Chorlton and can also be seen at https://www.facebook.com/paintingsfrompictures While my book, Chorlton-cum-Hardy A Community Transformed will be published in September and can be seen at
